First Community’s Podiatry Service provides assessment and treatment for patients with a range of foot problems, particularly those at risk of complications resulting from conditions such as diabetes, arthritic conditions, rheumatoid arthritis and vascular disease.

How to access the service

Patients registered with an east Surrey GP practice can access the Podiatry Service via a referral from their GP or consultant or by self-referring.

Self-referral

Patients can self-refer for podiatry services without having to see their GP first, however they must be registered with an east Surrey GP in order to self-refer.

There are limitations for accessing the podiatry service, which are based on the level of risk associated with a foot problem and the patients’ medical need. If patients meet the access criteria for foot care the service may be able to assist with the following problems:

  • Foot lesions wounds (e.g. ulcerations)
  • Problematic hard skin/ callus and corns
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Foot pain.

The Podiatry service does not provide a nail cutting service.

Patients can complete a self-referral form available on the website: https://www.firstcommunityhealthcare.co.uk/what-we-do/community-and-outpatient-services/podiatry. The page includes details of how the form can be returned via post or e-mail.

What happens once a referral is submitted?

Referrals will be assessed by the Outpatient Podiatry Team who will ensure that patients are seen by the right service at the right time. If a self-referral is deemed unsuitable the team will contact the patient to explain why and suggest a more appropriate route.

Self-referrals will be processed the same as referrals received from GPs and other sources, so self-referring does not guarantee quicker access to podiatry treatment. Self-referrals will save time as patients will not have to see their GP prior to being referred.

Where will appointments take place?

Appointments will be held at one of First Community’s outpatient clinics based in Caterham, Oxted, Redhill or Horley.
