How to refer

If you are an individual wishing to be referred to the adult dietetic service in Sussex, please discuss this with your GP or other health care professional, and they can make a referral for you. If you are a health care professional wishing to refer someone, please send a written referral to: fchc.firstdietitians@nhs.net.

What is a dietitian?

Registered dietitians are the only qualified health professionals that assess, diagnose and treat dietary and nutritional problems at an individual and wider public health level. Our dietitians work with both healthy people and those that are unwell. Uniquely, dietitians use the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease to enable you to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.

What to expect at your appointment

Appointments at a clinic:

  • One of the first steps is to ask you about your usual eating patterns and diet
  • Based on the foods listed and your eating habits your dietitian can then advise on a dietary approach suitable for your condition
  • You will generally be provided with relevant literature to support the advice given.

We will aim to provide you with tailored advice that is specific, realistic and achievable.

Community visit

If you are unable to attend a clinic because you are housebound we may be able to visit you at home. An appointment will be agreed at a time that suits you and the consultation will be similar to that described above.

How long will your appointment be?

Your first appointment will last for 30 - 45 minutes and subsequent appointments (if necessary) will last for approximately 30 minutes.
