We aim to provide comprehensive individualised rehabilitation programme, promoting physical activity and education to ensure patients have the knowledge and skill to influence the underlying cause of the disease and optimise their physical, social and mental health.
Cardiac rehabilitation (cardiac rehab) is a supervised exercise programme designed to help you get back to as full a life as possible after a cardiac event such as a heart attack, angioplasty, heart surgery and heart failure. You may also be offered the opportunity to attend a cardiac rehab programme if you have a new cardiac device implanted such as an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) or Permanent Pacemaker (PPM).
All patients referred to our service must be aged 18 or over and be registered with a GP within east Surrey area. Patients must have a diagnosis of heart disease and/or recent intervention or surgery. Most of our patients are referred directly following hospital based cardiac care.
On receipt of referral, the team will contact you to arrange an appointment. You will be offered an initial assessment, where you and a cardiac rehabilitation physiotherapy specialist will assess and discuss an exercise option available. You will then be enrolled into either, face to face group exercise sessions or into a home-based exercise programme depending on your individual preferences and specific needs.
Don't worry if you've never exercised before. Our cardiac rehab physiotherapist will make sure that the program moves at a comfortable pace that is safe for you. They will explain fully how the programme works and provide you with a tailored exercise plan.
Our exercise classes last for one hour and the average attendance is approximately 6-8 sessions dependant on your individual needs. We also will offer you a series of education sessions to support your rehabilitation.
Our supervised group exercise sessions are held on:
We ask that you attend the whole programme in order to gain a benefit from all the sessions. After cardiac rehab ends, you will be confident about exercising on your own and how to maintain a healthier lifestyle. It is important to continue the exercises and healthy lifestyle habits to maintain the heart benefits.
Depending upon your interest and preference we will refer you to continue an exercise programme in your available area gym or fitness centres once you have completed our programme.
