Patient feedback highlights impact of Neighbourhood Navigation Service

The First Community Neighbourhood Navigation Service is continuing to make a positive difference for residents across east Surrey, helping people access practical, financial, wellbeing and community support that can have a significant impact on their quality of life.

During July to September 2026, referrals to the service increased by more than 9% compared to the previous quarter, with an average of 30 new referrals every month. The service supports people facing a wide range of challenges, with the most common reasons for referral including mental health, social isolation, long-term health conditions, financial concerns and housing issues.

Monthly drop-in sessions at Caterham Dene Hospital provided advice and signposting to approximately 14 patients, family members and carers during the quarter. People received support on topics including benefits, transport, social activities, community groups and local services, helping to reduce uncertainty and support a smoother transition from hospital back into the community. Feedback from these sessions has been overwhelmingly positive, with patients describing the service as "beneficial and helpful to my needs" and praising the kindness and support they received.

One patient living with cancer was referred to the service after a fall meant they were unable to travel to a support centre they had previously relied upon. A neighbourhood navigator worked with the patient to identify a suitable alternative closer to home and helped them overcome their concerns about attending somewhere new. By the next appointment, they had visited the centre, become a member and enrolled on an art therapy course. The patient also joined the waiting list for counselling and expressed an interest in yoga and tai chi classes. The new connection provided fresh opportunities for emotional support, wellbeing activities and social interaction at a time when they needed them most.

The service is also expanding the support available across the community through the Joy Marketplace, a digital directory of local services and activities. There are now 239 services listed on Joy across Tandridge, Reigate, Merstham and Redhill, representing growth over the past year and providing residents and healthcare professionals with easier access to local support.

As awareness of the service continues to grow, the Neighbourhood Navigation team remains committed to helping local people access the right support, at the right time, in the right place, improving wellbeing and strengthening connections to communities across east Surrey.
