Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service Leaflet

Information for patients who have been considered for pulmonary rehabilitation.

What is pulmonary rehabilitation?

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service provides a specialised assessment, exercise and education programme to
patients who have a long term respiratory condition.

Patients will be invited to an initial assessment where it will be established if pulmonary rehabilitation is appropriate. If it is, patients’ needs and goals will be identified.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a six week treatment course, consisting of two sessions per week. It consists of tailored
exercise and education for people with lung conditions, enabling them to exercise safely at the right level.

Getting breathless is a normal response to exercise and is an expected part of the course. Pulmonary rehabilitation is not a cure, but helps to manage the condition and shortness of breath, making patients feel better and more confident to exercise and do daily tasks.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a lifestyle change which is only gained by completion of the course / treatment and hard
work. To benefit fully from the programme, all sessions must be completed, alongside home exercise to reach the individual goals set.

On completing the course, it is important to continue regular exercise and stay active. By attending and continuing exercise, patients will invest in themselves and their future.
