Young stroke survivor praises First Community team for life-changing support

Matt Walters, a 27-year-old stroke survivor, has shared heartfelt praise for First Community Health and Care, highlighting the vital role their specialist teams played in a remarkable recovery.

Following a hemorrhagic stroke last November, Matt described feeling shaken and overwhelmed by sudden symptoms, including weakness in the right arm and hand, facial droop, and difficulties with speech. At an age where such conditions are uncommon, the event led to a significant loss of confidence in both body and mind.

However, support from the Early Supported Discharge team began within hours of leaving the hospital. Matt credits the team's rapid response, personalised care, and consistent encouragement as crucial to his recovery journey. Through tailored rehabilitation exercises, reassurance, and ongoing guidance, staff helped rebuild Matt's physical ability and emotional resilience.

Matt recalls, The team was patient, encouraging, and deeply invested in my progress. They gave me confidence that improvement was possible, even when recovery felt uncertain.

Matt explains how the Community Stroke and Neuro Rehab Team (CSNRT) took the time to set goals collaboratively, celebrate progress, and provide motivation during more challenging periods.

Now, just eight months on, Matt reports an almost complete recovery. He has regained full movement, his speech has returned to normal, and he is back at work, he has also resumed hobbies including music, cinema visits, and gym-based strength training.

Reflecting on his recovery journey, Matt described his progress as remarkable and expressed deep gratitude to the team that supported him. I never felt like I was navigating recovery alone, Matt said. Everything I've regained is thanks to their help and support.

First Community is proud that the range of services they provided has helped Matt to recover at home by taking a consistent and collaborative approach.
